Recovery at Home
February 7, 2024Cold plunges, saunas, sensory deprivation tanks and other things that are not massage
March 14, 2024We have all been there. You really want to ask a few questions before coming for a sports massage but feel that you should already know the answer. There are some questions which you feel are embarrassing to ask. Well in this article I will try and cover as many of them as I can think of.
1What should I wear?
Wear something you can move around comfortably in as in the first session you will be asked to perform movements so the therapist can do a quick assessment before the massage. Wear comfortable underwear as after the initial movement assessment the therapist will leave the room so you can undress, keeping your underwear on and lying face down on the massage bed. Your therapist will cover you with a towel. Only the body part they are working on will be uncovered.
2Will it hurt?
You are in complete control in the session. There will be certain areas which will be more sensitive than others on your body and you can tell your therapist if you’d like them to apply less or more pressure. Your massage therapist will check in with you throughout the session whether the pressure is to your liking. There will be times where the therapist will ask whether you would be willing to endure a little discomfort in order for them to treat a particularly stubborn knot. Never feel bad for telling your therapist about your preference.
3If I don't like it, can I leave?
Of course, if you feel uncomfortable in any way you are free to leave. It would be greatly appreciated if you could send us your feedback so we can make you feel more comfortable if you use our service again.
4Do I have to know why I am feeling pain or discomfort before coming for a session?
Sports massage is there to reduce recovery time for athletes, address mobility issues, improve performance and also relieve general tight and sore muscles. Your therapist will not be able to diagnose your symptoms. If you suspect your problems may be serious it would be best for you to see your GP or to see a Physiotherapist.
5I feel shy about revealing my body.
Therapists are trained professionals. We see all sorts of people in our practice. You have no reason to be shy about your body. The therapist will not be in the room while you undress and you will be draped with towels during your session. It is natural to feel uncomfortable being in your underwear with a stranger but rest assured you are in safe hands. All our practitioners are insured, DBS checks and have all the necessary qualifications.
6What if my body makes unexpected sounds?
It is absolutely normal for you to make noises. Your stomach may rumble, you may even experience some expulsion of gas, your joints may click or you even moan or grunt. Nothing our therapists haven’t heard before.
7What if I get an erection during the massage?
This is a very common fear that stops people going for a massage. An erection during a massage is nothing to be embarrassed about. If you feel you need to take a pause from the massage to help settle down you can ask your therapist to stop touching you. Our therapists are professionals who understand the human body.
